Neonatal Nurse: Responsibilities And Duties
Babies are special. A neonatal nurse makes it possible for newborn babies to begin life on a positive note. Many times babies are brought into this world before their due date. This sometimes leads to babies that are not born with a healthy weight. Or, it results in babies that cannot survive without the aid of medical treatment. A neonatal nurse ensure that these babies are able to survive in the world. It does not matter if a baby was born premature and just needs a few days of extra care. Or, it could be a baby that was born with a serious medical condition or birth defect. Neonatal nurses are trained to take care of these babies and nurse them back to health.
If you work toward a bachelor’s degree, have a two to three years of training and are state certified, you can work in the field of neonatal nursing. This article will discuss the three levels of neonatal nurses.
The first level of neonatal nurse specializes in handling newborn babies that are healthy. Once upon a time there were hospital nurseries where healthy newborn babies were kept once they were born. However, since many healthcare companies are trying to find ways to cut down expenses, level one neonatal nurse are pretty much a thing of the past. Instead of newborn babies residing in hospital nurseries, they now spend this time in the room with their new mothers. This means that both the hospital and insurance company gets to save money. Level one neonatal nurses are not around in great numbers.
The level two neonatal nurse is responsible for babies who were born before their due date. Many times these babies are not sick at all. They just need more time to grow and get healthier before they are released from the hospital. They might need everyday common things such as special feeds. But, the extra care is needed before they are officially released to go home.
The level three neonatal nurse has a job that is harder and more stressful than the other two levels. She usually has to work in a neonatal intensive care unit that admits babies who are extremely sick and need specialized and advanced care. She takes care of babies who need special treatment that level one and level two nurses cannot provide. However, just like level one and two nurses, a level three nurses are trained to counsel parents on how to take care of their newborn babies. Thus, neonatal nurses should see to the needs of newborns and their new mothers.
Finally, neonatal nurses are skilled on three levels. The level one nurse takes care of healthy babies and is nearly nonexistent because of new hospital or healthcare policies. Level two nurses take care of premature babies who are perfectly healthy, but they just need a little bit of attention before they are released. Level three nurses have a strenuous job of taking care of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit. All levels of nurses must not only take of sick babies, but they also have to train parents on how to take care of them. The neonatal profession is very satisfying indeed.

Baby Care – You gave life – Now give Baby Care
Think like Judge Judy. What would Judge Judy say if she saw you doing that with your baby? Or while your baby was in the car? Child endangerment is a reality. TAKE CARE of your BABY. Did you know you can actually damage the baby’s lungs and brain with second hand smoke? It can. Be mindful of your baby care behavior.
First you must now think of yourself as a Mommy or a Daddy. No more excuses about acting out of line or getting in trouble with the law or driving without your seatbelt. You must at all times remember you brought this child into the world so YOU have a responsibility to care for him or her properly. It is time for you to grow up. BOTH of you. You are the baby care providers.
Next. Never neglect your infant or abandon her. Your baby’s future depends on how you treat him now. The way you treat that baby now is what the baby learns. You are the one who teaches the infant if it is loved or not. It makes a difference. Clean up your mouth. Clean up your language around the baby. Trust me you will have fewer troubles in school later on if you show good behavior around your infant while she is growing up now.
Third, BE GENTLE. Loving and holding and cuddling your baby helps to keep him healthier. Really it does. That means Daddy too! Even if your father never hugged you! Hold your baby. Show your baby care with both your touch and voice.
Fourth comes the baby care essentials, the absolute basics. If you need help. Ask for it. Find it. Most people would say these are number one. YOU must not be living out on the streets now. You are the provider and be sure to give baby food, water, shelter and safety and good hygiene. Don’t stress out or trip out. Just take care of the baby.
Fifth, Did I say BE GENTLE yet? You must NEVER NEVER shake your baby! That is another safety issue. You can essentially be beat up your baby’s brain when you do that and serious and permanent damage can happen. Both baby care and baby safety need your soft touch.
Sixth, Baby care requires attention. Keep your baby in a safe place. Is that car seat properly installed? Is the baby IN IT? And Secure? Is the baby’s crib or carrier safe? NEVER leave your baby unattended on the table. All it takes is a wiggle or two and your baby can fall to the floor in an instant. I mean don’t even leave the infant on the counter to go across the room to pick up that baby powder.
YOU are the parent. So act like a parent.Everybody makes mistakes. Learn from them. Nobody expects perfect. Even Adam and Eve had trouble with their sons! Pay Attention to everything your baby does. Keep your baby healthy by keeping him or her clean and dry. Change the diaper. Your baby care skills will grow if you give them a chance to. And so will your baby.
