In a world where so much is so easy to obtain, why does humankind still lack in some things? Food, transportation, entertainment, and technology is easy to access but for some reason, people are still missing out.

Cars, buses, fast food, movie theaters and golf courses are everywhere, but at what cost to our human connections has all of this convenience affected? Our everyday connections with people seem like they are limited to short conversations when ordering a meal with the waiter, or even a longer relationship with the person who is selling us a car.

How has all of this lack of personal contact affected our health and well-being? It seems that life rushes by smoothly and efficiently but actually we may be causing it to come to a grinding halt in the future.

Because there are researchers out there that have the same questions as us, we are able to finally get some answers as to how community affects out health.

To determine if community relationships had any impact on health, a study was conducted starting in the 1950′s in a community called Roseto, Pennsylvania. Psychiatrists followed a group of immigrants for over 30 years who were poor financially and had the same eating habits and lifestyles as neighboring communities.

The Roseto study found that the people in this particular community generally had longer life spans and were overall much healthier than their neighboring counterparts – even when including risk factors such as smoking and lack of regular exercise.

As long as the community stayed connected, the health of its occupants as a whole was very good. However, once connections started to fray and the people of Roseto became more self-contained, their health started to decline and become like those of neighboring communities.

The people of Roseto were not genetically different that those of other areas, nor were they different financially. However, they were different because of the strong link between them, and once this was severed, their health suffered.

In essence, close personal connections such as feelings of love and possibly even caretaking directly can positively affect our health even when behaviors typically considered unhealthy are still present. This is further supported by something I philosophized on in a previous article relating to how pets lead to these same feelings of love and in return positively affect our health.

The word community does not necessarily mean a large family – we may just have to be a little more creative and open in order to acquire the sense of community. For instance, take an simple activity and turn it into something more meaningful.

Do you ever go to the movies? Try instead to discuss a movie, book or your personal values with others to create a connection and the feeling of community. Also try getting to know people on a personal level.

However, it is important to understand that spending time by yourself is still very important as it generates internal reflection in understanding who we are as people. But unless we maintain the very important family or community ties like a well-oiled machine, we run the risk of becoming unhealthy and shortening our lives.

Even decaffeinated coffee still contains caffeine. A cup of decaffeinated coffee has the same amount of coffee as a 12 oz bottle of soda. Decaffeinated coffee may be a good option if you are trying to cut back on your caffeine. Many people may become dependent on coffee and can have difficulties breaking the habit.

To style fit and healthy you need to limit your caffeine consumption as it will only keep you up at night. Try to cut back to one or two cups a coffee a day and never any caffeine after 4pm.
